Collard sees consistency as recipe for success

With end-of-season silverware ready to be dished out in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Rob Collard believes all the ingredients are in place to ensure a sweet finish to his season at Brands Hatch this weekend (October 20-21).

The HM Plant backed driver will head into the finals day showdown on the GP circuit hungry for championship glory, and hopes serving up three more tasty results will ensure celebratory champagne is definitely on the menu come Sunday evening.

Collard will need to turn around a 28-point deficit to rival Andrew Jordan in order to claim the Independents’ championship crown he won previously in 2003.

At the same time the Hampshire-based BMW ace will also be looking to play his part in delivering the Independents’ team trophy for the eBay Motors team.

"Given the fact we came into this season with an S2000 car up against the new NGTC models, if you'd said we would be going into the final weekend with the chance of landing two titles I'd have bittern your hand off for that.

"The team have done a great job of maximising the performance of the car at every round, and from my point of view I've focussed on delivering consistency in qualifying and races.

"I've managed to get the BMW into the top five or six on the grid in most rounds and make good starts, which really helps you stay out of trouble in the early stages of a race.

"I've also consciously tried to play it smart and take points at every opportunity rather than fighting for every single position and maybe risking a DNF.

"It's paid off so far and we've even managed to outscore the manufacturer teams at some rounds, so hopefully the same approach will work in our favour this weekend too."

A clutch of good results would also give Collard the chance of securing his best ever finish in the overall BTCC standings, with fourth place well within his grasp.

For that to happen he believes his best chance will rest with the weather providing dry conditions that will suit the rear-wheel drive BMW 320si around the 2.3 mile GP circuit.

"I'm going into this weekend at Brands in a very positive frame of mind. We're coming off the back of some good results in the previous round at Silverstone, we shook down the car yesterday and everything was spot on, plus I've got a decent record around Brands in a BMW, so we should really be set up for a good weekend.

"However, I'm expecting the NGTC cars to be very strong and the likes of Shedden and Jordan to really fly, so we need to dial things in very quickly during practice and qualifying to give ourselves a shout.

"Anything can happen in the BTCC though and it will probably go right to the final race, so I'm looking forward to another massively exciting finish to the season and hoping we're the ones left holding the trophies at the finish."
