Impressive BTCC Season Opener
Rob enjoyed an impressive start to his 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship campaign at Brands Hatch in Kent, with a top 10 qualifying performance and a fourth place finish in the season opener.
Brands Hatch, Kent March 2014.
A strong 10th place qualifying performance in the eBay Motors BMW 125i M Sport set Rob up well for the weekend’s races. From a field of 30 drivers in front of a huge crowd, Rob put in an excellent drive to finish the first race of the year in sixth place.
As the field charged into the first corner for the second race Rob held position throughout the 27 lap race, putting in a solid drive to finish in a points scoring position.
The reversed grid format for the final race put Rob on pole position. He led confidently into the first corner and was holding off the closing pack until tyre degradation forced him down the order. Despite his best efforts, he had to settle for a fourth place finish by the flag.Up until that point, it was looking like a certain podium finish was on the cards.
To come away from the first round of the championship, having run in the top six in all three races and end up sixth in the standings, is a fantastic start to the season.
Rob Collard, eBay Motors “We have been much more competitive today than we expected so that is a real boost. Overall we are feeling very positive. We have raced competitively in the top six in all three races and run very strongly without any issues. I led the last race until my tyres started to go off, so as much as I am disappointed, we are really encouraged. There is still some work to do, and we have another test before Donington Park so that will give us an opportunity to work through a set up programme and make any changes ahead of the next round. We have had a solid weekend and I feel as a team we have learnt a huge amount. We are sixth in the championship standings so that bodes well for the season ahead. This weekend has been great. It’s an important one for the Collard family with my son Ricky debuting in Formula Ford. He has made an impressive start, taking his first Scholarship win and a third place overall podium in only the second race of his career. I could not be happier. It was a very proud moment for Jordan and myself seeing Ricky take his first win.”
The next round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will take place at Donington Park over the bank holiday weekend (19-20 April).
